Guide bushings can be simple devices that can increase the functionality of your router's capabilities if they are used correctly. Mounted in the router's base plate, the bushings follow a template that guides the router bit. The template is then transferred to another piece wood.

Guide bushings are a good choice for many tasks but they might not be the right one for every task. A bit with bearings makes it easier to cut decorative edges, grooves, and other operations. Because the template is smaller than your workpiece, guide bushings are not often found in router tables. This is because you'll be working blindly, which can lead to accidents.

The guide bush also allows you to use any drill bit that fits through its collar. Guide bushings are becoming more valuable because woodworkers constantly come up with new ways to use them.
